Summary
The story takes place mostly during the early 1970’s. Two students who have just completed summer jobs at a provincial park are contracted to do some painting, maintenance and minor repairs to a cottage recently purchased in the area. One of the tasks required is the demolition of an unused outhouse on the property. During the course of this demolition, they discover a bag of cash that has been hidden inside the outhouse ever since it was built, sometime during the late 1950’s. They are then faced with the question of what they should do with their finding and they have some conflict and disagreement in that regard. Who might the rightful owner be and why did he or she decide to hide the money there? An elderly neighbour provides some insight on the original owners of the cottage and they come across an old suitcase full of photographs, newspaper clippings and other mementos that provides possible clues. Some further research leads one of them to develop an elaborate theory of how the money might have come to be in their possession.
